Thor Action Figures, Anyone?

I've never understood why Thor has a hammer.  If I were a superhero, I'd choose something less cumbersome than a hammer.  I'd like to wield an indestructible samurai or maybe even a whip, but not a hammer, no matter if said hammer faithfully boomerangs back to me anyway.

Maybe, that's why I always cringe when I read crime news where the murder weapon is a hammer and the victim was practically pounded to death like a nail.  It's like carpentry gone wrong.  It's very brutal, I begin to wish it had been a different, less technical weapon.
